The story of VSF Fahrradmanufaktur begins in Berlin in 1985. V.S.F. stood for Verbund Selbstverwalteter Fahrradbetriebe, which roughly translates to "Association of Self-Managed Bicycle Companies."
The goal was to design and produce high-quality bicycles to contribute to a societal mindset change regarding mobility.
The company is characterized by a cooperative ideology:
- A horizontal corporate culture
- Input from employees, distributors, and customers in the constant improvement of models
- A sustainable business model (people, planet, profit)
The philosophy, as expressed by VSF Fahrradmanufaktur themselves, is:
"Both we and our customers believe that the bikes from vsf fahrradmanufaktur are much more than just a practical means of transport. They are an integral part of an approach to life that is based on sustainability and a sense of responsibility. The bikes are put to everyday and recreational use as an all-round form of transport, often replacing cars. This places high demands on the comfort, cycling fun, and durability, which we provide with an extraordinary degree of quality in all disciplines. We especially focus on the functionality and selection of the technical components. As passionate cyclists ourselves, we never stop considering how to optimize the products and always participate in the latest developments that take place in the cycling scene. The brand specializes in lightweight steel frames because steel still guarantees the most comfortable ride.
Unlike aluminum or carbon, steel absorbs high-frequency vibrations that are transmitted through the road surface (a suspended fork does not do this and unnecessarily increases the weight of the bike); this is why VSF Fahrradmanufaktur does not provide suspended forks. Most metal models from this brand, therefore, weigh less than similar aluminum models from other brands.
